Candidate Profile
Jay Bender is not a Native Texan, but he got here as soon as he could. Mr. Bender attended Spring Valley Elementary, Northwood Jr. High (now the RISE Academy) and graduated from Richardson High School.
Mr. Bender then followed his family tradition that stems back to the American Revolutionary War and enlisted in the U. S. Navy. Mr. Bender's father, having been medically discharged from the U.S. Army 5th Special Forces Group with his 4th Purple Heart during his third tour in Vietnam, wanted him to become a Sheriff in Colorado where his father taught Search and Rescue, but Jay had his sights set on becoming a Commissioned Officer in the Navy. He attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas while serving in the Reserves.
After graduating cum laude with a double major in Business Administration and Economics from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, Mr. Bender was recruited by Andersen Consulting. He worked there for two years before starting his own consulting practice.
Mr. Bender then decided to matriculate into law school. During law school Mr. Bender was honored by his classmates when he was elected President of their Student Bar Association. Upon graduating from law school, Mr. Bender was bestowed many honors and accolades including the most prestigious St. Mary's University wide award, the Presidential Award.
Upon graduating from law school, Mr. Bender was employed as an Assistant Criminal District Attorney in Dallas County under D.A. Bill Hill. He quickly rose through the ranks having proven his trial skills to the level of Felony 2.
Mr. Bender then became an Assistant Criminal District Attorney in Collin County for The Honorable John Roach. While working for Judge Roach he married a Marine brat, Lynn. Jay then opened his own private practice to better support his family. This allowed him to expand his areas of practice into family law, civil law, and business law in addition to criminal law. He is also General Counsel to Counterterror Training and Consulting, Inc. which provides training to law enforcement and military members in fighting terrorism.
